Most people don't believe in ghosts, but these stories might make you wonder a little bit more. Here are three creepy stories from people who actually experienced them.
Virginia Dare, the first Englishman to be born in the “new world” was the granddaughter to John White. They were starting a colonization in the “new world,” but they ran out of supplies to live on, so John White left for supplies and said he would be back within six months. During these six months the colonization was abandoned and the only sign of survival were the letters CROATOAN. Croatoan was the name of a nearby island which held two Indian tribes, the Manteo and the Wanchese. John didn’t have time to search because of a storm and he was forced to leave.
According to legend the Wanchese Indians attacked the colonists. Some colonists fled and joined the Manteo Idndians. Some of the colonists that made it were Virginia Dare and her mother. While fleeing the seen of the attack, Virginia Dare’s mother carved CROATOAN into the tree, most likely to tell anyone or everyone their location.
The white doe, a spectacular creature lurking around Roanoke, NC.
She grew up along with some Manteo Indians, and grew to be a beautiful maiden because of her beauty, she naturally attracted suitors or men with relationships meaning to engage. Among these men were the noble Okisko and a jealous sorcerer, Chico. Chico was first to ask for engagement, but she refused him. Chico shot an arrow into her that transformed her into a white doe. The odd-looking doe was generally seen walking slowly, moping, near Roanoke, where her peoples houses were decaying.
Okisko, hearing of this figured out that the other suitor of his love was a sorcerer. He connected the dots and figured out that the white doe was likely Virginia Dare. Okisko began to visit good sorcerers and found a way to shoot Virginia Dare with a special arrow and to bring her back to her original form.
A great hunter and warrior, Wanchese, had also heard about the white doe. He wanted to prove he was the best hunter, by killing the rarest animal alive. He took his silver arrowhead he received from the Queen of England and said that he would come back with the great trophy.
The both of them tracked the doe for week on end. Neither knowing the other is tracking the exact same thing. Although at the same second, minute, hour, and day, they found the white doe. Not only did they both find the white doe at the same time, but also shot at the same time, while the doe was drinking water. Both arrows struck the does heart solidly. The doe turned back into Virginia Dare, but still died because of the silver arrow.
Wanchese fled the island and never returned because of releasing what he had done. Okisko realizing what had happened broke down crying. He returned the body of Virginia Dare to his civilization and buried her in the middle of town. When she had been shot, where her blood had drained, a vine grew, with the best tasting, sweetest grapes ever. Although good tasting, the grape juice is as red as blood.
Even though the arrow was to have changed her back, the white doe is still known to haunt the Roanoke grounds to this day.
The Gray Man of Hatteras
The Gray Man of Hatteras, is a ghost who used to live near the lighthouse. His name before he died was Gray, and he drowned during a storm. He was a fisherman on the coast of Hatteras. Whenever there is a hurricane coming to Hatteras he appears only to warn people to leave, not to harm, and is always spotted on the same beach. It is said that whoever sees the Gray man, will come to no harm.
A great view of the first lightkeepers home and the lighthouse from the south side.
The Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp
Many people have reported seeing the notorious ‘Lizard Man’. He is said to be 7 feet tall, have glowing red eyes, and have 'scaly' skin. He also has incredible strength, and is supposedly able to rip apart a car if he wanted. The first reported sighting of the lizard man was on July 14, 1988. A boy named Chris Davis was on his way home, driving through Black Town, and the Scape Ore Swamp. He was driving through the swamp, he lost control of his car. He stopped, got out, and saw that he had a flat tire. As he was fixing his tire, he saw a huge, green beast crashing through the swampy woods. The teen got into his car and sped home to the safety of his parents. When he told them about what had happened, they didn't know what to think of it. It wasn't until many other sightings were reported that they actually took Chris into the station to report what he saw, to officer Truesdale. But the officer just shrugged off Chris' story, however he didn't do this with George Holloman Jr.'s story. He was riding his bike through the woods during the same summer as Chris Davis. He saw what he thought to be a tree moving. As a car started to come forward, and the headlights got brighter, Holloman saw a pair of glowing red eyes staring at him. He pedaled all the way home, but because he was a respected army colonel, so he didn't report seeing it until later on. The police decided to start a search party, and began following some tracks of the Lizard Man. They didn't end up following them though, because they led into Scape Ore Swamp. Some zoologists began researching, and studying information on the Lizard Man. They concluded that he was indeed a type of Bigfoot. They believed that because of these facts:
Bigfoot roams late at night
Bigfoot likes swampy areas like Scape Ore Swamp
The green appearance reported could have been swamp algae
The car damage was consistent with previous encounters
The Lizard Man
Witness descriptions
The sightings stopped after these discoveries, but only until July 24, 1990. Bertha Blythers had brought her children out to visit her mother. As they were driving through the swampy area, with all of the windows down, a large, brown, hairy creature quickly jumped to the passenger side. Bertha slammed on her brakes, and pulled her 11-year old daughter closer to her. There was also another sighting in 1991, in Richland County
